Do you install computer updates?

Do you install updates when your computer prompts you to? I always do and sometimes it leads to problems!
Here is me just rambling while I try to fix my computer!

I work in Vista and I also work on my MacBook- I find both annoying for different reasons!

Thoughts? Are you a Mac or a PC person or both like me?!

  1. Vista bites! Yes I do updates but not when it tells me. I wait until two weeks pass and see if there are problems with the “improved update” before I install.

    unavailable2day reply on May 20, 2008:

Vista has had terrible reviews… XP all the way! Too bad we lose support soon.

  2. For some reason, I get all excited when I get updates. They usually mean better things, at least for my Mac. :) Depending on what it wants to update, I may leave it until I have some downtime. Most big updates require an immediate restart. I hate shutting things down.

Buck reply on May 20, 2008:

hahhaha I knew you would like updates!!! :-)
I saw your twitter post Howard! I hope Twitter is not doomed!

  3. I run XP Service Pack 2 and now there’s an SP3…but I’ve been warned by various forums to wait because it’s buggy and will affect my music software! Buck, you may have to run a system restore and wait a few weeks (like what LoisLane said). thanks for the comment on my Apologize video! x

  4. I own a MacBook and love it! I update whenever prompted. Occasionally, there are problems…but if you send Apple a request (as many other people do at the same time) usually within a week, there is a patch. This happened with a GarageBand update recently. I try to stay away from Vista as much as possible. There have been way too many complaints. Macintosh is smoother. Hope your day goes well Buck, and good luck fixing your computer.

  5. I run Vista and it has taken FOREVER for me to get used to. I usually wait for the “OK” before I install updates…

  6. my brother always told me never to install them. Because they would get me in trouble. he being the computer expert person he is, and me being the ‘I screw up my computer’ person I am. I figured I’d listen..

so I dont instal them anymore,
if I do, he might actually start yelling at me lol.

but then again, I don’t use vista anymore and I don’t have a mac. so maybe im not one to talk.

    xo

  7. Michael,
Over my many years of dealing with this type of thing, I recommend you do NOT install drivers via Automatic Updates, I am referring to the updates from Microsoft. When you’re notified updates are available, chose Custom. When you do Custom, you are able to choose which you want installed. (Custom doesn’t imply “for Bill Gates Only” so don’t be afraid.)
For 3rd party software/driver updates go to the manufacturer’s website for instruction. Seems you had a dispay (vieo adapter) driver update which could be ATI Radeon, GForce, NVIDEA, etc.
    Good luck.

Buck reply on May 20, 2008:

    THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!
yeah it was a NVIDEA update!

BTW buck made sure your screen resolution is on the correct setting as 1440×900 is alot different from 1280×1024… just muck around with the resolution to get the perfect setting without anything being streched

They’re never for anything good and they screw up your day. >:(

  10. I run some updates and others I don’t. It depends what the update says. There is other stuff like Itunes that I don’t even bother updating.

Good luck, I will support you with my thoughts…that’s stupid.

  12. hey michael. I have a pc, vista, and the same thing happens to me too. Actually sometimes it just happens when updates are not being installed. What I do is, just clear all the internet cookies and all that, then go to the c drive and do a disk cleanup. Sometimes after that I do a virus scan and then it clears up the problem. I hope your computer gets cleared up soon though, I know that it’s frustrating. Hope your day is going great! xo Liana

  14. I run most updates. Which then, I too, regret. I just got a new computer, old one crashed. And this one has Vista on it. The old one had XP. I don’t like Vista and my new computer has a mind of it’s own. I’m ready to take it back and tell them to eat it. It’s a DELL Inspiron. I heard they were good computers, HA! Any one have any suggestions on really good computer that will do what you tell it?

  18. For myself:

    Windows Vista updates: yes
    AV updates: always
Third-party updates: read the documentation first (I don’t need any new-fangled useless toolbars)
Apple/Quicktime/iTunes/RealPlayer updates: stop bothering me already!
Browser based (Shockwave, Flash, Java… whatever): only if it’s so outdated, it stops working
    Anything else: wing it

  19. if you are not having problems with your computer but only with your monitor it might have a separate software it if you have a HD Flat panel screen I had problems with it a while back and I ended up fixing it I don’t deal with Vista I have XP and my computer is a Gateway.

  21. i can help! i can help!

everytime you install something you’re not supposed to, you can change it

    1st Step: Start, All Programs

    2nd Step: Accessories

    3rd Step: System Tools (Bottom)

    4th Step: System Restore

5th Step: Restore My Computer To An Earlier Time, Next

    6th Step: Pick A Date

I hoped I helped if you didn’t already get it fixed.

I am a gateway laptop windows xp person so that doesn’t fall into any category you gave.

Updates are good because they can sometimes protect you from spyware and viruses but they can get annoying if they change something without asking.

The only reason I wouldn’t download other updates is because I don’t have the time right then! Later when I do, I’ll download. How much later that is depends on my schedule.

    I’m definitely a PC girl!
